Software Usage Courses

Petroleum Systems Modelling

Petroleum systems analysis provides a fast and cost-effective method to address exploration uncertainties for basins, plays, or prospects. PRA offers a variety of instructional courses in the application of our software.  Course participants learn geological theory along with the application of the software to petroleum systems modelling.  Courses can be held at the client’s offices or at Platte River’s Boulder, Colorado location, and vary from 3 to 5 days in length.

BasinMod

An integral portion of petroleum systems analysis is the one-dimensional basin model.  This course discusses the theories and methods of basin modelling, from the explorationist’s point of view, and how the methods are applied in BasinMod. By the conclusion of the course the participants will thoroughly understand the workflow of one-dimensional modelling and the benefits of using BasinMod as a tool to model petroleum systems.

The course is divided into several sessions, which address different basin processes such as physical, thermal, geochemical and fluid.  The BasinMod course topics include:

  • data entry
  • burial history
  • compaction
  • thermal processes
  • maturity
  • source rock geochemistry
  • pressure, modelling
  • chemical compaction (diagenesis)
  • radiogenic heat – basement heat flow
  • imaging the petroleum system, unconventional plays, and
  • a workshop building a model with the client’s own data.

BasinView BasinFlow

BasinView performs petroleum systems modelling and integrates other Platte River petroleum systems tools in a map-based interface.  Course participants use multiple BasinMod models in addition to surface grids or isopachs to generate surfaces for a variety of calculated values.  Results can be displayed as maps or cross-sections.  For more information on BasinView click here.

BasinFlow models hydrocarbon migration and entrapment potential at the prospect, play or basin level by calculating hydrocarbon fetch areas, migration paths and potential traps.  Participants have the opportunity to build a BasinView model using their own data.  For more information on BasinFlow click here.

The BasinView/BasinFlow course topics include:

  • building a BasinView project using BasinMod .mod files,
  • building a BasinView project using grids,
  • Bidding Wars – An Exploration Game,
  • Calibrator, modelling hydrocarbon migration in BasinFlow, and
  • a workshop building a model with the client’s own data.

BasinMod Risk

BasinMod Risk allows the user to quantitatively analyze the entire petroleum system of a prospect including examining the source rock, expulsion and migration, and forecasting the recoverable reserves in a trap.  Topics include: Probability distributions and sampling, methods, procedure, simulation of the BasinMod Risk model and a workshop with the client’s own data.  To learn more about BasinMod Risk, click here.

BasinMod 2-D

BasinMod 2-D models migration of hydrocarbons from generation within the source rocks through migration and accumulation in traps.  Results include hydrocarbon saturation, permeability and generation pressure through time.  Models can be built from seismic data or from BasinMod models.  Course participants learn how to model various stratigraphic and structural scenarios utilizing capabilities of the software, including true 2-D pressure, 3-phase fluid flow, and salt movement.  The clients’ build a model using their own data.

The BasinMod 2-D course topics include:

  • theory
  • understanding the chronostratigraphic section
  • building a simple conceptual model
  • adding to the conceptual model
  • building complex unconformities (disconformities)
  • angular unconformities
  • adding detail and constraints to the model
  • eroded unconformities
  • build a model with client’s data, and
  • viewing the results - The Mathematical Model and Calibration.
